NUJ Warri Correspondents Chapel, Condemns Unlawful Arrests Of Members

The Chairman of Warri Correspondent Chapel Of Nigeria Union Of Journalist Comrade Victor Okpoumor has Condemned the Invasion of its Press Centre by the IGP’s Squad in Strongest terms.

Victor Esseien reports that the union also issued twenty four hours ultimatum to the Inspector General of Police to investigate the isssue.

The Chairman of Warri Correspondent Chapel Comrade Victor Okpoumor said, the police who claimed that they were from the office of the Inspector General of Police invaded Warri Press Centre and arrested Mr. Matthew Omonigho of Daily Post, Mr.Edeki Igafe of News Agency of Nigeria, Francis Saderhre of Business Day, Christopher Odamah of Delta Trumpet and Oyenka Meluwa of Punch Newspapers adding that the reason for their arrest were not known.

Though the arrested journalist were later released after the intervention by the Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Inuwa Mohammed.

Chairman had earlier on mobilized her membesr in protest to the area command’s office where the police asked the arrested journalist to report, but the police were no where to be found.

In a reaction, the chairman Warri Correspondent Chapel, Comrade Victor Okpoumor and Ex-Officio of NUJ Delta Council Comrade Felix Ekwu condemned the invasion of the Press Centre and unprofessional display of the policemen from the IGP.

The Nigeria Union of Journalist Delta State Council urged the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter adding that for the fourth estate realm to be harassed and intimidated in such a manner, shows how deteriorated the county has become.
