Edo Governorship Election Tribunal Sitting marred by thuggery and violence

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal commenced sitting today, Monday 9, 2024, but with violent attack outside the court room.

The pre-hearing on the petitions challenging the September 21, 2024, governorship election results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), however proceeding went on and the court adjourned for adoptions on December 18, 2024.

Unidentified supporters suspected to be APC and and PDP memebe attacked each other within the court premises.

The prompt intervention of security agencies forced the thugs outside the court

It will be recalled that on September 22, 2024, INEC announced All Progressives Congress candidate, Monday Okpebholo, the winner of the election, with 291,667 votes, ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo, who polled 247,274 votes, and Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata, who scored 22,763 votes.
Seven parties, including the PDP and six other parties have filed petitions in the three-member tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, challenging the results.
Apart from the PDP, the Accord Party, Alliance Party, Social Democratic Party, Allied Peoples Movement, Action Democratic Party, and Zenith Labour Party are contesting the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
The tribunal was inaugurated by the National Judicial Council one week before the election, with its Secretary, Muazu Bagudu, confirming the pre-hearing schedule.
